Are You Getting the Most from Your Network?
A network is for easy sharing of resources. When you think about it, a network is nothing more than an extension of your computer. It allows you to access resources (disk space, printers, information and such) as if it is actually a part of your computer. Obviously, if those resources are not shared, they’re not available. If this is the case with your network, you might as well turn the network off. A network is for securing critical information. In this day of hackers and computer theft, providing security for critical data is a must for all companies. Unfortunately, most companies don’t secure their data and don’t even know that their data is not secure. Proper utilization of a network guarantees that data is never lost or stolen. Do you still store your data on your C: drive? If so, it's probably not being backed up. The worst time to find this out is when your local hard drive fails and you lose everything! In general, all data should be stored on a server where it is secure and regularly backed up. We can pretty much guarantee this is not the case at your facility if you have not addressed this issue. A network is your portal to the world. The Internet and World Wide Web have opened up the world to us all. By tying your network into the Internet you make that world available to your personnel. Of course there are right ways and wrong ways to do this. Done wrong, your network becomes a portal for the world to your company. If you have Internet access through your network you are at risk! A network is a highway to productivity. Email and workgroup collaboration provides the key. If you’re still printing and distributing memos on paper, you’re missing the boat. The productivity resulting from a properly configured and utilized network is absolutely phenomenal. So that’s what a network is for. How do you get there? Simple!
