Tip #6

How Do You Prevent Computer Problems?

Having to react to a problem that’s already occurred just proves that steps weren’t taken to prevent the problem in the first place. Computers are no exception. Computers and information technology have become such an integral part of the way we do business that their failure often represents the single most costly event that can occur in your company. Failure of a single critical component of your computer network can turn what is otherwise a productive staff into an ineffective and huge cost.

Computers are machines just like your car. You readily accept the need to change the oil in your car but probably don’t consider the same preventive maintenance needs of your computers. Realizing that computers are what they are, machines, will allow you to accept the need for preventative maintenance.

There are three points to be considered…

  • Quality – Buy a Lexus and you’re cruising for years to come. By a Yugo and you may not cruise beyond the lot. The same is true of computers. Acquiring the cheapest computer out there is invariably the most expensive thing you can do. Pay for quality from the outset and you’ve eliminated the majority of downtime risk.
  • Life Span – As with all machines, computers have a limited life span. They eventually just wear out. Recognize this now and plan for regular replacement of all of your information technology.
  • Preventive Maintenance – Computers need their oil changed periodically. This is especially true of mission critical components such as servers. Most computers need to be serviced perhaps once every six months or so. If your environment is a bit more extreme, such as a manufacturing environment, this needs to be every three months or so. This maintenance not only involves the hardware, it also includes installations of software patches and updates and optimizing disk drives.

Now, before you jump in and start chasing dust bunnies out of your computer, STOP! You need to know what you’re doing before opening up the case. It’s very easy to zorch a computer with stray static electricity. Most folks aren’t really qualified to do this and it’s probably best to get a bit of professional help here. Data Systems is the help you need for this. Our goal is zero downtime for your equipment and systems and is one that is easily achievable. Just ask our clients. Want more information?
